What is Telecine
The word telecine comes from the combination of the words Television and Cinema, and is the process of transferring film into digital form. Machines which transfer film are also known as telecine machines.
Telecine was initially invented to transfer film into analogue video signals, for broadcasters to have film content within their programme schedule.
Telecine works by a beam of light which is projected through the film onto a 3CCD pick-up device that translates the image into a digital video signal. Once the images have been translated into a digital form they can be adjusted for colour grading and other correctional requirements.
Synchronisation of the film motion and the electronic video capture of each full frame is the most complicated part of the telecine service. The video capture of the telecine must sample the light in perfect sync with each full frame of film, so as to ensure no film flicker and perfect transport to the required media. Each frame of film is photographed at the same capture frame rate that the 3xCCD sensors process images.
